The Irish Angus Cattle Society held their 13th annual Elite Sale last Saturday the December 12th in the Showgrounds Carrick on Shannon Co Roscommon.
This year due to the Covid 19 pandemic the sale was run in accordance with Government and HSE guidelines. No show took place on the morning of the sale. However, to accommodate any potential online buyers that couldn’t attend the sale, a pre-sale parade of animals was videoed and displayed on the Irish Angus Facebook page the morning of the sale. A limited number of ringside buyers were allowed into sales arena at a two-metre social distance. These restrictions did not hamper the sale from being one of the most successful Elite sales in a number of years, a total of 35 animals surpassing the €3000 mark. Males averaged €3300 a €400 increase on the figure in 2019, clearance was also substantially up with 80% of the bulls finding a new home.
A record Elite sale price of €8600 was paid for Ernehill Samson bred by Francis & Noel Fitzpatrick, Milltown, Belturbet, Co Cavan. Samson was bred by the renowned Ballymagrine Wonder going back to a HF Rebel dam. He also had the style and index to match the breeding being 0.8% for beef cow calving ease and five stars on the terminal and replacement index. He sold to Oliver Haugh, Feenagh Angus, Co Clare.
Cavan breeder Frank McKiernan, Lacken Lower, Ballinagh took both the second and third highest price bull on the day. First was Drumcrow Savoy sired by Cashelane Lord Jeremy he sold for €6200 to Coney Island Genetics. Drumcrow Spectacular was Franks second bull to enter the ring on the day and the hammer was dropped at a price of €6000 for the Drumcrow Joker son. He has gone north to a herd in County Antrim.

The heifer trade was also met with strong demand on the day. A 73% clearance was achieved with average price settling at €3150.
Top price of €7300 went Thomas Mulligan Currycramp, Dromod, Co Leitrim for Clooncarne Savanna. She is sired by the herds illustrious stock bull Cloonacarne Frank and out of the highly successful show heifer Clooncarne Nicky. Savanna found a new home in the herd of Padraig McGivney, Granard, Co Longford.
Next up was Bunlahy Rihanna bred by David & Aidan Reynolds, Bunlahy, Aughnacliffe, Ballinalee Co Longford. She is sired Carrigroe Mr Rebel and of a Netherallan Peter Pershore bred dam. She sold certified incalf for a price of €5300 to the Gigginstown Pedigree herd in Westmeath.
Cork breeders J & F Appelbe, Carrigroe, Clonakilty Co Cork came next in line with their January 2019 born incalf heifer Carrigroe S Lady Jane. She was sired by the prolific stock bull Rathosheen Hugo and out of the Loughlynn Ace bred dam Carrigroe D Lady Jane. S Lady Jane carried the highest replacement index in the sale catalogue and she sold for a price of €4500 to Cavan breeder Mark McCaffrey from Ballyconnell.
